• Aether Systems, an Owings Mills, Md., firm that sells wireless software and services, reported a narrower fourth-quarter loss. The company lost $118.1 million ($2.86 per share), compared with a loss of $132.3 million ($3.37) for the fourth quarter of 2000. Excluding non-cash charges such as amortization of intangibles and expenses relating to options and warrants, the company lost $42.1 million ($1.02), compared with $35.2 million (90 cents) the year before. Revenue for the fourth quarter was $25.2 million, down from $25.8 million the year before.
• Nextel Communications shares took a beating, closing down $1.73 at $5.05 per share, a 52-week low, in spite of news that it added more subscribers than expected during its fourth quarter. But the company also recently disclosed that its Nextel International unit was in default of a $382 million payment to Motorola, one of Nextel's major vendors. Last month, Nextel International disclosed it may file for bankruptcy protection. |
