We don't need handset portability between carriers since companies like VZ and PCS offer national coverage. I have never been anyone in the US or Canada where I cannot use my Sprint phone. Same for Verizon.

As a consumer, I like handset portability so that my "investment" in the handset can be perserved when I move from 1 carrier to another. Without handset portability, it is very difficult to justify the purchase of an expensive hanhset. I really love to have one of those PDA handsets but I am not willing to paid if I'm stuck with one carrier.
I can understand this is one way for carrier to lock in their subs and reduce churn rate.
