Eva Cassidy - There aren't too many songs of hers that aren't great. And I don't think of her as a cover artist; she's more of an interpreter in the manner of Sinatra. When she takes on a tune, it develops a unique personality. Just listen to her version of S&G's "Kathy's Song". And her recording of "What a Wonderful World" takes on a stronger meaning when you learn that it was the last song she sang in public at a tribute concert to her a couple days before she died. As I've mentioned before, I'm still kicking myself for not having seen her. Until she was diagnosed with cancer and got airplay on the jazz stations, I'd assumed she was a rap singer because of her association with Chuck Brown (the godfather of rap). And she used to play at a small bar just a few miles from my house. A replay of the Roy Buchanan story of a quarter century earlier.
