You have two choices: Install and Upgrade. Install replaces your old copy of Windows with a fresh copy of Windows XP. The downside is you'll have to reinstall your old applications. Upgrade will preserve your existing applications and is recommended unless you want to start fresh. If you have a damaged Windows 98 registry you may not be able to upgrade, but XP should advise you of this.

When you insert the Windows XP CD into your machine you'll get a list of options. One of them is to perform a system check. I recommend you do this first as it will provide a report of any potential hardware and/or software conflicts. Do not ignore this report. If it detects something worrisome you can always ask here and we'll help you figure out how to get around it.
