Actually, both Tench and Paul have a valid point. If AMD were serious about competing in the PDA market, why not go for an ARM core, since the industry is rapidly moving in that direction? Alchemy might have a good product line, but it will be too tempting for the AMDroids to have their eyes glaze over with the prospects of AMD owning a new market, before they even realize what kind of market AMD is trying to get into. Part of AMD's success will depend on how popular MIPS infrastructure ends up being for PDAs, and right now, it doesn't look promising.

But maybe you see something that we don't. Maybe you could explain how this purchase will benefit AMD's long term plans, rather than it just being some other half-assed attempt to copy Intel's successful businesses. While you're at it, maybe you can address Tench's point of why so many people praised AMD for shedding its embedded divisions over the past few years to create a "leaner CPU division", only to praise AMD again for investing back into the embedded market with the Alchemy purchase.
