An Install only wipes the C:\Windows directory. All others are unchanged. The reason you need to reinstall the apps is that most apps set registry values and an Install starts you with a clean registry.

Networking with XP is a breeze compared to all prior versions of Windows. You should have no problem with XP detecting your LAN and autoconfiguring itself.

XP includes a Files and Settings Transfer Wizard which will allow you to migrate IE favorites and such, but if you're like me your favorites links has gathered quite a bit of clutter over the years and an Install is a great opportunity to do some housekeeping. Just save the C:\Windows\Favorites directory and repopulate your new IE with those you really use. :)

Another tip which is useful is to preserve your old C:\Windows\Fonts directory if you've picked up any specialized fonts over the years. The XP Font Wizard can then easily merge any of the old ones that aren't included in the XP distribution into your new font list.
