Interesting bit about Acer. Am I getting too paranoid or
the article suggests via p4 chipset can be used if less
athlons would be sold?

Acer May Use Via's Chips With Intel's Pentium 4, Paper Says
2002-02-06 19:28 (New York)

Taipei, Feb. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Acer Inc. may start using a
chipset made by Via Technologies Inc. that supports Intel Corp.'s
Pentium 4 processor, the Economic Daily News reported, without
citing anyone.
Via's 2001 profit fell more than a fifth in 2001 as a legal
battle with Intel over patents made customers reluctant to buy
Via's latest products. Chipsets work with computer processors to
control graphics and other functions in a personal computer.
Acer may use Via's chipset with the Pentium 4 in a desktop
computer it plans to introduce in March, the newspaper said.
Intel's prefers customers to use its Pentium 4 rather than
processors used by rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc., the paper
said. It's less concerned that customers are using Via's chipsets
that support its processor, the paper reported.
In September, Intel sued Via, saying the second-largest
computer chipset seller infringed its Pentium 4 microprocessor
patents by unlicensed selling of chipsets that may be used with
Intel's Pentium processors.
