As an alternative amd might want to shift over to lower end of the market and keep the unit market share as is.

I don't know if something like this could be called strategy, it's more like an unfortunate outcome.

I'd think that athlon xp would be more than adequate against Intel's celeron family :-)).

I think it is. AMD should just drop Duron when Austin produced chips are no longer competitive, and just keep selling lower speed grades of Athlon for lower prices, effectively addressing the market Duron is serving now. Mainly because having low end and even lower end doesn't sound like a ticket to success.

Things should be back to normal when AMD can supply volume quantity of .13u desktop chips, but in the meantime (Q1 and Q2), I see trouble on the horizon.
