Micron Declines Comment on Report Hynix Agreement Due Tomorrow

By Heejin Koo

Seoul, Feb. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Micron Technology Inc. declined comment on a report in a Seoul paper that it may conclude an agreement with Hynix Semiconductor Inc. as early as tomorrow.

Spokesman Sean Mahoney said the company isn't making any statement on a report, carried in the Seoul Economic Daily, that Micron has agreed to take over the debt of a Hynix plant in Eugene, Oregon, paving the way for agreement tomorrow to buy Hynix assets.

The paper said the debt agreement may push the cost of the takeover beyond the expected $3.8 billion, citing an unidentified official close to Hynix's special restructuring committee.

Hynix Chief Executive Officer Park Chong Sup is in the U.S. for a fifth round of negotiations with Micron. Hynix, the third largest chipmaker, has debt of 8.64 trillion won ($6.5 billion). It's been in talks with larger rival Micron since early December on deal that could create the world's largest chip company.
