It is the affirmative duty of government to provide security to its citizens. Bush would have been derelict not to have taken the steps that he has since a direct attack was launched on our shores. In the circumstances, it is not time for an extensive review of our military or intelligence capabilities, because we have to deal with the immediate threat, which is likely to escalate. The imperative is to acquire the resources necessary to enhance our capability to search and destroy hostile assets, and to thwart plans for new terrorist outrages. In this, those responsible must be allowed to do their jobs. They are the ones making the hard decisions. They are privy to information we are not, and they cannot operate with full publicity, without destroying their intelligence capabilities or putting lives at risk. All of this is pretty obvious, and should not be used to feed cynical speculations that undermine the ability of the nation to defend itself........
