Calpine concerns 'overblown': analysts

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11:34 ET Shares of Calpine are bulling $1.22, or 18 percent higher, to $7.02. Volume is 17.3 million shares, which is more than double the daily average over the past 200 sessions. On Wednesday, the stock tumbled 22 percent on volume of 61.4 million shares after the energy marketer disclosed that it had received an informal request from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's enforcement division in the wake of a Dow Jones newswire report last month about selective disclosure allegations. Analyst Christopher Ellinghaus at Williams Capital said the SEC issue is "overblown," as the "mere action of seeking enhancements to financial disclosure does not equate to a questioning of the financials or the accounting." Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown's James Dobson also came to Calpine's defense. He said Wednesday's declines were "unwarranted," since the company reiterated an ongoing effort to improve financial transparency. "Importantly, we remain confident that the accounting, liquidity and viability concerns surrounding Calpine are overblown by the market," Dobson said in a note to clients.
