Until the $170 billion/month in federal expenditures is published in an auditable website so the public can drill down to look at any transaction (like the GAO should, but probably doesn't, do), we'll have opportunities for what avuncular ol' rascal James Baker III lovingly called "mischief", in quite another context. I doubt that would help much. There are supposed to be people already watching this money slosh. If they can hide it from them, they can certainly hide it from Joe Sixpack. Or you. Or I. Remember (actually, I'm not sure this is still correct) there are parts of federal expenditures that don't show up in the public budget. Say, NSA. Remember, Enron got away with bloody murder for a long time. And somehow, I don't trust this administration to fix the problem. Either with the strock sale problem or 401K money. But I think I have a lot of company in that camp.
