I think some people are still uneasy at the amount of money NEM paid to complete that merger. Also, it had made quite a move up from its lows. But of course I don't really know. I do believe that the biggest gold company in the world may attract increasing interest from mutual fund managers.

Even a busted money-losing tech stock like Lucent still has a market cap about twice what NEM will be when the merger is complete--and NEM turned profitable before the recent run-up in gold prices.
