National Assoc. of Real Estate Investment Trusts
www.nareit.com

Real estate investing comes in many forms. You can look into buying apartment complexes, vacation homes or raw acreage. You can also check out real estate investment trusts, which invest in holdings of all kinds. This comprehensive site is run by the trade association that represents the industry. Educate yourself on REITs by looking at historical returns, company profiles and industry articles. The easy-to-use glossary defines complicated terms like adjusted funds from operation: REIT speak for money that will be returned to shareholders. Helpful charts give returns from as long 15 years ago. There are also sections on tax implications, investing basics and trust profiles.

BEST: By far the most comprehensive site on the industry. From taxes to returns, it's all here.

WORST: Design makes navigating tiresome. The left-hand screen has far too many options that pop up under headings. A loose mouse click can open an unwanted page.
