The gathering defense strategy of Skilling, Lay, et al. -- that while at the top of the heap they didn't know anything about their company -- inspires this question: Why not anticipate Wall Street's next bogey-man scare? Right now it's balance sheet accounting. For the next one, my nominee is: companies with grossly over-paid morons at the helm. It's way past time analysts started down grading companies with pusillanimous boards that routinely approve ridiculously high CEO salaries.
