tejek,

re: Agreed, but for AMD even to be considered, its a definite step up. However, Intel has a strong hold

I'm thinking they'll continue to use both, but Intel by virtue of the 2p and 4p systems enabled by a functional chipset will get the bulk of the sales.

What will be really interesting to watch is whether Sun agrees to develop a Merced system. They were in early on with the Itanium program but Sun and Intel got into a fight and that project died pretty early. It's going to be a really hard pill (for Sun) to swallow, since the Merced is basically an HP PA-RISC chip, so it's like Sun is using HP's hardware to sell Solaris. What would be really funny is if you could run Solaris on an HP Merced system and HP-UX 11.0i on a Sun box.
