Component supplier Vishay Intertechnology Inc. reported a net loss for the fourth quarter ended December 31 of $53.6 million, or 35 cents per share, including restructuring and non-recurring charges, on sales of $381.1 million. The pro-forma loss was $8.9 million or 6 cents per share.

In the year-ago fourth quarter, Vishay earned $140.6 million, or $1.01 per share on sales of $643.6 million.

While fourth-quarter sales and earnings were weak, Felix Zandman, chairman and chief executive, based in Malvern, Pa., noted that the company's book-to-bill ratio had risen above 1.00 for the first time since 2000, to 1.06.

He added that bookings in the company's semiconductor business, excluding recently purchased General Semiconductor Inc., rose 28% sequentially from the third quarter.

For the year 2001, Vishay earned $513,000 or 0 cents per share on sales of $1.6 billion after charges. Pro-forma earnings were $119.3 million or 84 cents per share.

By contrast, Vishay earned $517.9 million or $3.77 per share on sales of $2.4 billion a year earlier.

Zandman, who expects bookings to continue increasing, projects Vishay's earnings will improve in the first fiscal quarter of 2002.
