Singapore shares mixed in pre-holiday lull

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore shares were mixed by midday on Friday with some beaten-down blue chips attracting mild bargain buying, but activity slowed ahead of next week's Lunar New Year holidays.

The bellwether Straits Times Index was up 0.19 percent or 3.21 points at 1,720.32 by the break. The index is down 3.2 percent on the week but still up almost six percent since the start of the year.

Losers beat gainers 128 to 87 in the broader market as volume fell to 215 million shares from 243 million at the break on Thursday.

The Singapore market will be open for half a day on Monday and stay shut on Tuesday and Wednesday for the holidays. Normal trade resumes on Thursday.

Among blue chips, United Overseas Bank as up 1.43 percent at S$14.20 after sliding 3.45 percent on Thursday. OCBC Bank inched up 0.78 percent to S$13.00.
