First, the guy was using dual 1.7GHz Xeons

Obviously you didn't pay attention - he said they were 20% slower. So you do the maths:

1.7/.8 = 2.125GHZ

so I was being kind to the P4. It really is a dud, needing a 112% speed increase over a P3.

The effects he saw are repeated with a lot of software, apart form the benchmarks that Intel has decreed are the ones to use. Sure Intel has a nice compiler, but that doesn't matter for 99% of users. If you have an AMD processor, you already have a nice compiler without forking out $500 per user to INTC.
