Bill, Re: They[Intel] have some parts of their CPU faster, but the AMD CPU does more work, more than enough to offset the extra speed of the p4. So it is a race and they have made another Rambus type bet on their 64 bit lead sinker.
I don't see it as being a race. AMD can now make all the A XP/MP series the public demands. that happened for the first time, IMO, last quarter.
AMD has announced the choice to *ADVERTISE*, using Formula One -- perhaps the worlds single most public advertising platform, to correct the situation.
This is no part of a MHz contest. Intel won that, for now. It is no part of a performance contest. AMD won that, for now.
The contest now is to get all manufacturable product sold at Intel comparable prices.
As Ben said at the end of the BOA Q & A:
Message 17033005 So worry about pricing. From the point of view of shortage of P4s I showed a chart in my presentation, we've gained market share every year since 1996. In that 5 year period, Intel's had shortages, they've had too many parts, Intel's had shortages again, they've had too many parts, we've had shortages, we've had too many parts, etc. etc. We're gaining market share all the time. The reason we're gaining market share all the time is our products are better. And, um, they'll have more Fords, because the P4 is a Ford compared to the Athlon a a Ferrari. Yeah, it's a lousy, lousy, .. um ?Ford? didn't make much money last quarter. A but the fact of the matter is that the Athlon XP outperforms the P4 -- by a lot. Our model 2000+ outperforms significantly the 2Gig. Northwood, not the old one, the Northwood with the increased cache. It also is slightly higher in performance than their 2.2 Gig Northwood. So, um, we believe we are always going to be faced with a very tough competitor, but when we have significantly good products, when we have products that are competitive and are lower cost, we treat our customers like people instead of like ?? we'll gain market share. And we'll continue to do it.
[Noise and a question]
And the real reason why that our ASPs went up was not because Intel's P4. It's because the Athlon XP initiative selling delivered performance instead of clock speed. 'cause we were able to sell the product competitively with what they delivered instead of just clock speed. |
