Michael, regarding PC's in Egypt.....

I honestly don't know what the penetration rate (number) is here in Egypt but I suspect it is quite low. If I were to venture a guess, I would say that that the home use PC penetration rate in the Cairo is less than 1%. With estimates of Cairo's current population ranging from 15-18 million people, that should give you an idea of the untapped potential for the PC here in Egypt.

The big problem is money. The lack of it. Many of the people living in Cairo are very poor, and struggle to earn enough to feed themselves and their familes. Buying a PC is not high on their priority list and probably won't be for some time.

Even the degreed Egyptian engineers that I work with, can't afford to buy a PC for their home use. It would require them to save an amount equal to twice their annual salary. So, they are limited to using the desktop Pentuim PC's that we have here at work. And use them they do. Many are quite accomplished PC hacks.

On a more optimistic note, there are signs that the seeds of the "PC revolution" have found fertile ground here in Cairo. The following are some recent personal observations:

1. Numerous internet service providers available. They are growing in number and available services each month. Hopefully, this will put more people (mostly the upper class and wealthy)in the market for PC's.

2. The recent opening of a "cyber cafe" at the Maadi* Grand Mall near my home. I visited the place last week and it was packed. It was equipped mostly with old 386 and 486 machines. People are dropping 12 Egyptian Pounds ($3.50) an hour for the newfound pleasure of surfing the net. Maybe with all the loot they are collecting, the owners will soon upgrade to Pentium Machines.

*Maadi is the area of Cairo that I live in. It is where many of the Embassies are located and a popular area for expatriates.

3. While getting my Egyptian driver's license last month I was pleasantly surprised to find that a digital camera was used to take my picture. The digital image was then processed and stored using a Pentium PC. There was only one device of this kind in the office and there were over 50 people waiting in line to get their picture taken. It seemed to me they would soon be in the market for another PC.

4. My Egyptian landlord (fairly wealthy man) told me he wants to start trading stocks over the internet. He does not curently own a PC and was asking for my advice.

That's all for know..

Regards,
