Samsung bigger than Ericsson in cell phones
DI Feb 8, 2002
South Korean electronics giant Samsung is selling more mobile phones worldwide than Ericsson Sony, and continues to take market shares. The company's focus on the high-end segment allows it to achieve profit margins equal to Nokia's, Samsung vice president Il-Hyung Chang tells Dagens Industri.
"We aim to be largest on the most important markets. Of course, there is a big gap between us and Nokia. But in Western Europe and North America we are growing faster than our competitors," says Il-Hyung Chang. Samsung has made rapid progress since entering the cell phone market in 1997. The Korean firm sold half as many phones as Ericsson in 2000.
Last year, Samsung had a 7.5 percent global market share, compared to 7.3 percent for Ericsson. Nokia confirmed its position as mobile master with 35.6 percent, followed by Motorola, 15.7 percent. (DI)
