By then, IBMs reputation as the PC company was gone for ever.

Shortly thereafter Intel joined with Compaq to design the EISA bus and IBM no longer owned the bus architecture. PCI followed a couple of years later. Intel was relying on unreliable chipset support which was limiting their CPU sales so they decided to roll their own and thus took over the chipset business. Meanwhile IBM had licensed the i386 and i486 for internal production but in partnership with MOTO and APPLE had designed the PPC so IBM declined to license Pentium.
