WashPostie: Enrongate Not a Bush Scandal

Washington Post reporter Lois Romano admitted Thursday that while the mainstream press has tried to paint Enrongate as a White House scandal, in reality chief Enron villian Kenneth Lay was never that close to President Bush.

"Well, you know, we try to make everything political," Romano told radioman Don Imus.

"I think it's an economic story, it's a financial story, and I think it's a personal story," she observed. "But, you know, early on everybody was trying to link Lay with Bush and I'm not sure they were that close."

Romano said she covered Bush during the presidential campaign going back to 1999, which resulted in a seven-part series for the Post.

She told Imus, "This guy's [Ken Lay's] name never came up. I mean, he was just some money guy in the background. I never heard of him going to the mansion or the ranch or him having some rich personal relationship with Bush."

Lay's distance from Bush is the reason attempts to tarnish the White House with the scandal are "starting to fade a little bit," Romano said.

Imus had some advice for the Post reporter's colleagues still trying to gin up Enrongate as a White House scandal.

"We need to find some hookers and lap dancers in all this," he told Romano.
