News Release
Mr A.E. Daem reports
The 1997 exploration program at Diagounte West has clearly demonstrated the
outstanding potential for the development of one or more open pit gold deposits.
The company, in the short term, will continue the reverse circulation drilling
program as long as weather conditions permit and plans to commence a diamond
drilling program as soon as possible.
The following is a summary of the gold bearing anomalies which have been
examined by a combination of drilling, trenching and soil sampling during the first
half of 1997 with the exception of the alluvial gold deposit on grid 2A. Assay
results from 1,500 samples are still pending.
Grid 1A: A detailed grid was constructed over seven anomalous gold values
(+100 ppb) in soils covering 14 sq km;
Grid 1B: Birmian meta-volcanics in eight areas with anomalous gold values of
+100 ppb in soils;
Grid 2: Extensive laterite plateau overlying a possible paleo-placer deposit with
three soil samples containing +100 ppb and one sample 200 ppm Au (6 oz/t);
Grid 2A: Large gold bearing alluvial deposit; more assays are pending;
Grid 2B: Large highly sheared gold bearing zone with quartz veins, stockworks
and areas of silicification extending 7km inlength and up to 125m in width. This
zone is deep seated and is not associated with laterite or any form of surface
enrichment and has potential for development into a large open pit. The drilling
results in grid 2B have been lower than expected due to problems with the
samples obtained from the reverse circulation drill. Management believes that fine
gold losses are occurring either in dust cycloned to the atmosphere or in samples
reporting to surface;
Grid 3: Quartz veining around a gold bearing granite stock-41 trenches and seven
reverse circulation holes;
Grid 3A: Saprolite, gabbro and quartz veins exposed over 400m strike length.
Grid 2B
At grid 2B the assays for 20 of the holes have been received. Mineralization
occurs throughout the holes, however ore grade intersections are less than
projected from surface sampling, which averaged 2.02 g/t.

Grid 2B assay results returned
(0.5 g/t cut-off)

RC-1 6m grading at 1.00 g/t
RC-5 4m grading at 2.06 g/t
RC-7 2m grading at 1.45 g/t
RC-8 4m grading at 1.54 g/t
RC-9 11m grading at 1.92 g/t
RC-32 18m grading at 1.27 g/t
(twin of hole 9)
RC-10 1m grading at 8.50 g/t
RC-11 1m grading at 1.09 g/t and
1m grading at 1.50 g/t
RC-13 1m grading at 1.08 g/t
RC-14 3m grading at 1.39 g/t and
2m grading at 0.9 g/t
RC-15 1m grading at 1.42 g/t
RC-16 1m grading at 6.10 g/t
RC-17 4m grading at 1.89 g/t
RC-18 through to RC-24
awaiting assay results

The surface trenching and channel sampling program continues. The first trench
completed on line D is on section with hole RC-32, more assays to follow.
Geology in the trench and the drill hole correlate well. However, ore grade assay
values observed in surface sampling are reporting in the drill holes as zones of
anomalous gold mineralization only. This discrepancy is under investigation. The
trenching confirms that ore grade mineralization is associated with weathered
bedrock and is not surface enrichment due to laterite or alluvium. The majority of
the RC sample is powder. Test drilling, in twinned holes, using different rotation
speeds and water injunction, improved gold recoveries. However, the company
believes that the reverse circulation drilling is still undervaluing the gold
mineralization.
Grid 3
A 10m gold bearing vein dipping at 30 degrees is surrounded by a gold bearing
zone of arsenopyrite and pyrite. To date, three mineralized zones have been
located near the 600m square granodiorite intrusive.
To date, 41 trenches were excavated to examine the quartz vein structure
containing 2.57 g/t over a length of 770m. The trenching confirmed extensive
quartz veining within a mineralized stockwork. Assays are pending. Hole RC-30
returned an intersection of 54m grading at 0.48 g/t, including 16m grading at 0.63
g/t and 4m grading at 2.78 g/t.

No. Intercept

RC-27 6m - 1.41 g/t
RC-27 18m - 0.53 g/t
RC-28 19m - 0.66 g/t
RC-29 37m - 0.61 g/t

Grid 3A
This grid, which occupies a hill summit, is an extensive zone of saprolite. Saprolite,
gabbro and quartz veins are exposed over a 400m strike length. Due to poor
exposure at lower elevations, the saprolite cannot be traced along strike. At the
summit, the saprolite forms a recognizable unit, measuring 64m in true width.
Layering and colour variation are apparent. Red colour is found adjacent to the
vein and yellow near the metavolcanic schist on the eastern margin. Quartz veins
and quartz stringers with tourmaline and manganese patina fill the joint planes
within the saprolite. A trenching program is planned to test the mineralization and
extent of this zone.
Grid 2
Grid 2 geographically occupies a very large laterite plateau dissected by ravines.
In the sides of the ravine, a 3m thick flat-lying paleo-placer was observed that
consists of large (3 inch) sub-rounded to rounded cobbles of tourmaline quartzite,
white quartz and saprolite. Visible gold was observed in a cobble. Geological
mapping and channel sampling will precede drill testing.
Grid 2A
This grid covers 5 sq km of gold bearing alluvium. It was investigated by 27 pits
that varied in depth from 1.6m to 8.8m and grades that varied from 0.2 to 2.1
grams per cubic metre.
The on-site laboratory facilities which commenced operations in June will provide
assay results quicker than those obtained from the laboratories in Bamako.
