A debt service of 40% does seem a bit steep. But that in and of itself may not mean much, depending upon what your parents are using the debt for. Perhaps their case isn't unusual - I think you are probably right about that.

It would be interesting to know just what the debt service breakdown is across America today relative to credit cards. But those figures aren't available. At least to my knowledge. It would make an interesting study.
