There may have been some arrogance and their certainly was some stubbornness involved but the idea wasn't that we were above the Geneva convention as much as it was that the detainees were not covered by it.

If you can either take the position that the Geneva Convention applies but that your detainees aren't POWs under it and leave the rest of the world feeling warm and fuzzy or take the position that the Geneva Convention doesn't apply and getting everyone all exercised that we think we're above the rules, it only makes sense to do so. When it's no skin off our nose to be collegial and cooperative, we ought to do so without hesitation, not have to be dragged kicking and screaming. It's one thing to consciously alienate others when there's something important at stake. It's just dumb to do so unnecessarily.
