1,600 metres of wire stolen from power line in N Ossetia
ITAR-TASS NEWS AGENCY - February 09, 2002 10:26
VLADIKAVKAZ, Feb 09, 2002 (Itar-Tass via COMTEX) -- Dozens of enterprises and thousands of people in North Ossetia were left without electricity and heat last night.

The reason was not a routine power cutoff but a theft of 1,600 metres of wire from a high-voltage power line on the outskirts of Vladikavkaz.

Electricity supplies resumed on Saturday morning. This is not the first theft of non-ferrous metals in the republic. For several kilograms of copper or aluminium, thieves barbarically destroy power substations, steal benches in parks and public gardens, and even fences in cemeteries.

They take all stolen metal to special offices that buy non- ferrous scrap metal. There are about 40 of them in North Ossetia. As a rule, the investigation of such thefts produce no results, although police say that they represent a problem for professionals.
