Elan was frigging built on the principle that accounting abuse in Ireland could lead to leveraged growth. It worked. Now it doesn't.

Exactly. We're talking a company that was obviously over valued, waiting for some of the leverage to report in. The whiners should focus on "research premium" and how to profit from the new reality.
