The Republicans learned late the importance of keeping up this kind of pressure. I also think they have a good shot in Louisiana and Georgia if they use some resources there.

Smith has to get bumped in the New Hampshire primary, and that will give them a "hold. Otherwise it's a loss.

"Liddy" Dole wasn't going to get the nomination in N. Carolina before the Carville/Greenberg/Schrum attack, and she will not now. But the race for the final will be tough.

They seem to have a basket case in Colorado (Allard). They should take a hard look, though, because the race can be won.

Christine Whitman is a disaster whenever she holds an office, but she runs very well. Maybe she can bump off "Honest Bob" Torricelli in this new atmosphere where the public sees the damage that corruption can do. (Would that Enron had collapsed in 1998, when so many people were saying that Clinton's crimes "didn't matter". History doesn't always serve with distinction). I'd prefer Shundler.

I predict, even at this early date, a Republican gain of 5 in the Senate, and 18 in the House. Puff will be very quiet in the following two years.

Another, near-term prediction: Campaign Finance "Reform" will be significantly amended by the House before passage. It will then disappear into Conference, never to be seen again. No more people will care about that than now care about its passage-which means VERY few...
