Not really, unless they wanted to use very high density JJ's. It is enough to separate two overlapping layers of SC with a very thin insulator to create a Junction, the the two SC "leads leading to the junction can be orders of magnitude much greater than the thickness of the insulator in the junctions. Of course, JJ technology still need deep cryogenics, so the breadth of applications is minimal (few terahertz range scopes and signal analyzers, the fastest I have see (some ten years ago) was 77 GHz).
