Loss of a genius

midday.chalomumbai.com

EVEN as everybody concentrated on the Vajpayee-Musharraf meeting, one received the sad news that well-known Pakistani poet Qateel Shifai had expired. In fact, Shifai was one poet whose lines have been extensively sung by Indian ghazal singers like Jagjit-Chitra Singh, Pankaj Udhas, Talat Aziz and Ashok Khosla.

Of Shifai’s works, Milkar Judaa Hue To Na Soya Karenge Ham, Apne Haathon Ki Lakeeron Mein Basaale Mujhko, Chandi Jaisa Rang, Kiya Hai Pyaar Jise Hamne Zindagi Ki Tarah, Ghungroo Toot Gaye, Pareshaan Raat Saari Hai and Sadma To Hai Mujhe Bhi are popular.

But a personal favourite is Zindagi Mein To Sabhi Pyaar Kiya Karte Hain, Main To Mar Kar Bhi Meri Jaan Tujhe Chaahoonga, sung brilliantly by Mehdi Hassan. Only a sheer genius can write a song like that. May Shifai’s soul rest in peace.
