Steve Cohen, for example, is able to command 50% of total profits running his fund cause he is so good. Cramer, though not a huge fan of his, posted a multi-part article on running a hedge fund on thestreet.com a while back, and made mention of the lucrative compensation that these managers get. Salaries are often low, but the bonuses are massive. Cramer's fund posted a 35%+ return I believe in 2000, I guarantee he made an absolute crapload of money, while probably only getting a minimal salary. That's why many high-profile analysts and traders leave to work for hedge fund, cause of the insane amounts of cash they can make.
