If you factor in the weakening Canadian dollar then they ain't much different. Currencies skew everything from the price of stocks, houses, steel or sugar, but in the case of the last two US government intervention makes the skew even worse. (Probably skews house prices as well with the recent attack on Canadian lumber).

The US finds it politically expedient to either subsidize, restrict or impose tariffs rather than attack the root cause which is an over valued dollar.

These things always end badly, unfortunately....
