But, 20 years out of date is a bit more hyperbole than is warranted.

It is? That's when it started, not ended, John... And the denunciation and scape-goating of the US support for the Shah has continued ever since in order to stir up cynical support for themselves, as well as to distract attention from the repression they have implemented in Iran.

"The president settled the whole debate by saying 'Iran, this is not the moment. This is not a regime we can have a warm and fuzzy relationship with,' " says a senior Pentagon official, referring to President Bush's inclusion of Iran as part of an "axis of evil."

It's the hardline Iranian government that we currently have a problem with. They are not elected officials and they control both the military and police in Iran. Khatami has been confronting them ever since he WAS elected, only to have his supporters intimidated and put in prison.
