One lone soul of integrity in the GOP...from the Arizona Republic...

....He's [McCain] a Republican who doesn't toe the party line. His views often conflict with the Bush administration, particularly on the issues he feels strongest: a patients' bill of rights, and campaign finance reform.

He often co-sponsors legislation with Democratic colleagues, and was one of only two Republicans to vote against Bush's massive tax cut last year.

And since Sept. 11, McCain has kept the public pressure on Bush. A recent New Yorker profile details the hard fight he put up in order to place airport security under federal control. The White House wanted it under control of the profit-driven airlines.

He has also opposed certain defense programs he says amount to war profiteering.

In particular, he cites a $30 billion deal with Boeing, which has the military converting leased jets for use as cargo planes and transports, and then turning them back into passenger jets which Boeing can then use for profit.

On Friday, McCain diverged from the Republican stance again, introducing a bill that would require auto manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency......
