If those Itanium style RISC solutions had really been able to maintain their shares of the market, their owners wouldn't be dumping them. They were both killed off (largely) by X86 price/performance.

The same thing appears to be happening to Itanium.

Try adding the prices of Xeon and Athlon MP systems to that comparison and you'll see why HP threw in the towel on PA-RISC and Compaq did the same with Alpha.

And why the clouds are getting thicker over Itanium.
