<<Occasionally, if my PCs memory is overtaxed or the browser weirds out I'll get some funky colors.>>

I finally found the culprit, by accident, and feel really silly. I had been installing some older games (only for my son of course) a few weeks ago. Looked at the color setting this weekend and found that it had been reset (by the color gremlin of course) to 256 colors rather than 16 bit high color. In hindsight, it sure does seem obvious to check the color settings when the colors are wigging out.
