Because of continued stability problems and the inability to run high speed NICs, AMD is phasing out the OEM supply of the Athlon MP. The failure of all Tier 1 and 2 sever vendors to adopt the AthWipe MP made this an easy decision. AMD will continue to supply a small number of the Athlon MPs to the DIY market and to the Friends of Steve Harris, Director of Bargain Bin Sales at AMD. The products in the Bargain Bin Channel will stimulate a chorus of applause among the AMD fanatics on the internet and produce an Enron-style enthusiasm for AMD revenues. The lost wafer starts for the Athlon MP in Fab 30, AMD's only modern facility, will be replaced with low margin MIPs designs from Alchemy. Chairman Jerry Sanders said "this continues the proud AMD history of copying Other People's designs and using Other People's Money".
