Rex, that's what makes it so hopeless. It's all wrapped up in religion, sacred sites, jealousy and hate and there is no "solution" that will fix it for this generation and probably the next. It is a matter of perservering and hoping that over time enlightenment will come. The approach requires the wisdom of Soloman and the patience of Job. It means suffering and reacting with reasonableness. It means creating a better life for average Palestinians where possible. Either that or it means genocidal war or Israel exiting the middle east. Are there any other alternatives?

Whatever else you may think of Clinton, he did exert a steadying influence on the conflict. He tried to push it too hard too soon before he left office and it came apart, but over his years in office he gave moderates on both sides hope and dampened the waves of violence. The moderates on both sides are quieted now. Many Israelis do not live in Israel. Many Palestinians who could afford to leave are no longer there. Who is left?
