A site needs revenue, like any operation, and its members must recognise that fact ... at the same time, so many of us are spoiled by the Dryers' grandfathering for gratis ... there's a pride thing that comes in too, it's like if they want me they can just invite me free of charge, my posts are sufficient as contribution ... then, even after deciding to pay, few want to hand out credit card numbers to anybody .... but there are only two sources of revenue flow - subscription and advertising ... i absolutely loathe the latter, grossly offended by the flash pop-up garbage especially .... so that leaves subscription as logical, until somebody comes up with a better idea .... and it needn't be much, once you get a site going a small annual charge to each of thousands of members should cover it
When the Dryers started up boards were a new concept to most, SI was unique in its quality, so it caught on big and fast ... different environment now, not a novelty any more and there are many boards ... but iHub is top quality, you'll get that critical mass of posters imho .... cheers |
