Researchers at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston say they believe they have now found the first addresses in the ZIP code system of the human vasculature. The addresses could vastly improve the delivery of drugs and therapeutic cells.
The Texas scientists generated billions of viruses that carried on their surface 47,000 peptides — short strings of the amino acid units of which the body's proteins are made — and injected them into a 48-year- old who was terminally ill with cancer. Fifteen minutes later, after the patient had been taken off life support and died, the researchers took samples of his tissues and examined the distribution of the peptides...
