Thanks for the insight re: the microarray decision. Re: fiber glut, I was at a talk by Desh Deshpande of Sycamore where he made comments consistent with your point. The simple fact, which may be grasped by analysts eventually, is that the really expensive part of the fiber laying process is getting the big PVC pipes in place; new fiber can be blown in later through empty ducts as needed.

And my takeaway from that was that Corning could obsolete the existing fiber by improvements - fewer devices - amplifiers etc. required - that would make it cost effective to put new fiber down. And I like Corning rather than JDSU because doing fiber and devices gives it a strategic advantage. Also, GLW, in doing its optoelectronics JV w/ Samsung, seemed to realize very early that the name of the game was getting the unit cost down.
