Once again Etrade has me blowing steam. I just noticed this morning that an account which happens to be an old IRA account of mine that is basically inactive (I don't fund it and it has a couple of worthless stocks in it) has a negative amount in it. I looked at the activity and noticed that they have been charging me $35 for the dsl service from this account (apparantly I have gone under the amount of trades for the free service)- they should have been debiting the amount out of my main account. No problem - it is a mistake and I figure I will call to let them know that the debit needs to be coming out of a different account.

I call up and explain the situation to the first rep. Go through the what is your name, SS#, etc. He tells me that it's not his department and he needs to transfer me to an IRA rep. Get connected to an IRA rep, get asked the same security questions again, explain the situation and he tells me it's not his department I need to speak with and he will transfer me to Technical. I get transferred to Technical, get asked the same questions once again, explain the same scenario for the third time and am told that it isn't a technical problem and he needs to transfer me. At this time I blew up and asked to speak to a manager - he refused to put a manager on and said that it isn't a technical issue so a technical manager is not going to help me - he got real arrogant with me because I was perturbed. He then transferred me to a guy named Ben in Accounting - finally this guy took all the information and said that he will have someone look into it and it was a mistake that Etrade was deducting funds from my IRA account.

Why is it that I needed to speak to four different people before they hooked me up with the right person? This has always been my gripe with Etrade. When you speak with a customer service rep and they don't have a clue (which is usually the case) they always transfer you to someone else who doesn't have a clue either. Their reps are totally inadequate when it comes to customer service.
