RE: Enron giving the Nature Conservancy money.... Actually it was to promote the trading of credits for reducing CO2 emissions.

(At the time, Kyoto was expected to result in targets for CO2 emissions, under that scenario the trading of credits - much as pollution credits are now traded in the US... a Reagan initiative - would be a way to involve the Free Market in CO2 emission reductions. The Free Market has always proven to be a more efficient way to adjudicate these type things than by bureaucratic fiat and oversight.)

Enron thought of itself as primarily a trading firm, and believed that they could make money trading these 'CO2 credits'... thus their push to implement them.
