SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb 12 (Reuters) - Micrel Inc. (NasdaqNM:MCRL) said on Tuesday it would buy back as much as $20 million of its common stock as shares of the analog, digital and mixed-signal microchips have slumped 29 percent so far this year.

The San Jose, California-based company said that repurchased shares will be used to meet the company's obligations under its stock option plans, employee stock purchase plan and 401(k) plans for employees.

Micrel said that repurchases will occur from time to time in the open market or in privately negotiated transactions through Dec. 31, 2002.
