Matsushita Launches Power Management IC for the New Intel PXA210 and PXA250 Applications Processor; Small, Low Power Consumption Suitable for Portable Wireless Devices
February 12, 2002 11:34
OSAKA, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 2002--Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., known worldwide for its Panasonic brand of consumer electronics and digital communications products, announced today that it will launch a power management IC (Product Code: AN32500A) for portable wireless devices based on the Intel(R) PXA210 and Intel(R) PXA250 Applications Processor.
The new IC, which only requires a low supply voltage and operates with a software controllable voltage management in accordance to CPU(1) performance, is slated for mass production in the 3rd Quarter of 2002.
As the market for portable wireless devices such as PDAs(1) and cellular phones increases, so will the number of functions needed to satisfy customer demands for these products. There has been an increasing need for a power management IC that allows the CPU to operate at a low supply voltage and controls the power supply voltage in accordance to CPU performance, thereby decreasing total power consumption in the device. Matsushita has developed an IC with a low voltage circuit of +0.8V in the regulator, and by creating a new voltage control system to obtain a stable power supply.
"The Intel PXA210 and PXA250 Applications Processor features industry-leading performance to support multimedia at the highest level, using less power. We appreciate that Panasonic will introduce the power management IC, a device which will benefit users through its small size and relatively low power consumption," commented Mark Casey, director of marketing for Intel's Handheld Computing Division.
"Panasonic is committed to supporting a digital network society with key device technology. Our new power management IC will help expand applications of the new Intel PXA210 and PXA250 Applications Processor for advanced wireless devices," states Mr. Hideo Kawasaki, Director, Analogue LSI Division, Matsushita's semiconductor company.
Matsushita plans to ship over 100,000 new IC's per month at a sample price of 500 yen.
Features
1. High integration of power control circuits by built-in 4 channels regulators.
For power control in the mobile information handsets with the Intel(R) PXA210/ PXA250 Applications Processor, 4 channels of power regulator circuits were integrated. Especially for the regulators except the boost-up channel, output transistors are embraced, which will help making those equipments smaller and lighter.
1 Channel: Power supply for CPU core
Enables to setup output voltage from +0.8V to +1.3V. Output voltage can be set between +0.8 and +1.3V. Maximum output current is 300mA.
2 Channels: Power supply for memory and peripheral components
Adjustable by external variable resistance from +1.8V to +3.3V
Maximum output current is 300mA and 400mA for each.
1 Channel: boost-up converter
Output voltage is +5V. Maximum output current is 500mA (OK)
Software controllable voltage can be set via IIC bus.
As the power control on PDAs with Intel(R) PXA210/ PXA250 Applications Processor is performed by this power management IC, it contributes to reduce the power consumption and downsize the equipment.
2. Synchronous rectification system(3) achieved the low power
consumption.
By adopting the synchronous rectification system, high electric power conversion efficiency (4) is achieved. By combining with software controllable voltage management, it can contribute to low power consumption of mobile equipment greatly. Moreover, since the operation frequency is fixed, the measure against a noise can be performed easily.
3. Mounted in leadless and thin type package (HQFN)
It is carried in the thin shape 64 pin HQFN package with 8.2mm2 size.

Central Processing Unit, the central part of a computer which manages the data processing, control, judgement, etc. Especially the device which constitutes CPU in a single LSI is called a microprocessor.
(2)PDA
It is the abbreviation of Personal Digital Assistance, which has the function of personal information management such as own schedule, address book, TO DO lists and so on. Usually the palm-top electronic equipment which performs some of the major functions of personal computers.
(3)Synchronous rectification system
It is the system that raises electric power conversion efficiency by transposing the diode for rectification of a DC/DC switching power supply to the transistor synchronized with switching frequency.
(4)Power conversion efficiency
It is the ratio of the input and output power, PIN and POUT. The electric power conversion efficiency n(eta) is expressed by n(eta)=POUT/PIN. It shows that the closer n(eta) is to 1, and the less the internal loss becomes.
