NEWPORT, Wales -- Semiconductor equipment supplier Trikon Technologies Inc. today reported a 39% sequential drop in revenues to $12.0 million in the fourth quarter of 2001 compared to $19.7 million in Q3. Trikon's sales were 65% below $34.1 million in the fourth quarter 2000.

The supplier of deposition and etch tools posted a net loss of $249,000 in the fourth quarter of 2001 vs. a net income of $7.7 million in Q4 of 2000. In the Q3 period, Trikon reported a net income of $894,000.

"Equipment orders were scarce throughout the industry and the resultant lower run rate recently has depressed gross margins," said Nigel Wheeler, president and chief executive officer of the Newport-based company. "Whilst order levels remain low at this time, they did pick up in the fourth quarter with a net book-to-bill ratio of 0.66:1. We also took further action to cut costs during the fourth quarter, on top of the previously announced reductions, which resulted in an additional reduction of $380,000 in the expenses run rate."
