Feb 6, 2002
- Samsung was selected ahead of Alcatel, Lucent Technologies and Nokia in the tender - Success in the first international tender in 2002 is expected to accelerate Samsung’s ADSL business
On February 6, Samsung Electronics, the world leading company in broadband access era, has been awarded to supply Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Lines (ADSL) networks with a 1.16 million-subscriber capacity to Chunghwa Telecom, the incumbent telecom operator in Taiwan, with bidding to cover the whole area of Taiwan. This, the first ADSL tender open to international bidders this year, drew such big name players as Samsung Electronics, Alcatel, Lucent Technologies, Nokia and NEC. Samsung’s strong showing in the Taiwanese tender bodes well for the company’s telecommunication system exports this year.
A Chunghwa Telecom official said, “Samsung Electronics received high marks for having broadband access network technology, being the frontrunner in the Korean market, and exhibiting the know-how to install and operate telecommunications networks.”
This tender is included SHDSL for business purpose as well as ADSL for residential users.
Dr. Changsup Shim, VP and General Manager of Broadband Business Unit of Samsung Electronics, said, “We are building upon the success which has achieved in Taiwan. Now, vast resources are being focused on the high-speed internet business, with primary emphasis on xDSL.”.
Samsung will supply and install the ADSL systems and incidental equipment required to serve 1.16 million subscribers. The company is also in a favorable position to win follow-up orders for future expansion projects.
