OK I believe you about the salt deposits; it's just that further south along the Appalachians there's lots of limestone, coal, shale, sandstone, but I don't remember any salt layers. But the basalt is volcanic, probably part of what comes out as the Palisades, Triassic, left over from the rifting open of the Atlantic. I had thought of salt domes as characteristic of younger sediments in Louisiana, Texas, southern Mississippi and Alabama. I guess I had thought all the salt had been squeezed or leached out of Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and older layers but evidently there are places where it has not been.
